Acne can be frustrating problem and can often affect confidence and self esteem. Acne is caused by blockage of hair follicles by oil (sebum) and dry skin cells. If the plugged pore is open to the skin is called a blackhead and if it is closed then it forms a whitehead. The bacteria on the skin can infect the area and cause pustules and cysts which are the main concern for patients.
Hormones during teenage years and during the menstrual cycle/pregnancy can cause acne. Genetics also plays a role and often acne is present in siblings and parents when they were a similar age. In older people smoking can cause/aggravate acne.
The treatment of acne is dependent on the severity and can be a combination of over the counter creams/gels, antibiotics and chemical peels. We will analyse the skin and make a suitable treatment plan for you. The appropriate after care advice will also be given so the problem as can prevented in the future.
